How To Produce A Video in Three Steps
Video production comes in three main steps--the pre-production step, a filming step, and an editing step.
Each part of the process is equally important. A lot of people put too much focus on just the filming, but the truth is, you won’t get very far without pre-production or excellent editing.
Whether you’re new to producing videos or need a refresher to get back to the basics, we’ve put together this brief guide on what to prioritize in each step when making a video.
Pre-Production
Pre-production mostly involves planning out your video project. Like with any project, you can’t go in without a plan. Whether it’s just you or an entire crew, you will save yourself a lot of trouble by laying everything out on the table. It helps with organization, communication, meeting deadlines, and the video’s actual quality and content.
It would be best if you also used pre-production as the opportunity to solidify what you want your video to be. During pre-production, some things to plan will be your video’s overall objective, your storyboard and script, your target audience, the location of filming, and your time or schedule of filming.
As much as possible, pre-production is about getting all these factors planned out to the letter. Once you’ve finalized all your planning, you can move onto filming.
Filming
Filming isn’t just about bringing a camera around and turning it on. Some other things to keep in mind will be the lighting, sound quality, and shot types. All of these will affect the final output of your video. Even if all you need is some natural light, you may get stuck with an unfortunately overcast day that won’t give you the light you need.
If you’re not well-versed in professional filming setup, you can also hire a video production team. An experienced crew will likely have all the equipment needed to film a visually gorgeous video. They’ll also be skilled in taking good shots, which will all complement your video’s overall tone and message.
Editing
Editing is an incredibly arduous task, but it’s especially crucial for finishing a video. You won’t end up with much if you use raw film clips.
Editing can change everything about your video. Editing involves not just setting the sequence of your clips but even color grading, audio mastering, and sometimes keyframing as well.
Editing is where you can ensure your viewers will see what you want them to see and feel what you want them to feel.
You can’t afford to underestimate any of these three stages of video production. If you’re able to accomplish each part well, you’re guaranteed to have a cohesive and compelling video.
